The Extraction Class: Dismantling Democracy to Hoard Power and Profit
The Civil War Brewing Within MAGA: Part 3
In our previous installment, we explored the Christian Nationalists' quest for a theocratic America. Now, we turn to another influential faction within the MAGA movement: The Extraction Class, a cadre of tech moguls and corporate elites who view democracy as an impediment to their vision of a technocratic future.
The Extraction Class is indifferent to faith or nationalism; their primary concern is control. To them, democracy is an outdated and inefficient system, obstructing their ability to manage society with the same ruthless precision they apply to business. Their ideal future envisions artificial intelligence dictating policy, corporate leaders setting the rules, and the public reduced to a managed workforce devoid of genuine governance participation.
Peter Thiel, a billionaire venture capitalist, has been instrumental in advancing this vision. Thiel has financed far-right candidates, including JD Vance, aiming to install loyalists poised to dismantle existing democratic institutions. In 2019, Vance co-founded the Rockbridge Network, a Silicon Valley-backed organization supporting right-wing political activities, with a $75 million budget for the 2024 elections. High-profile backers include tech investors like Thiel and Rebekah Mercer. Rockbridge aims to weaken regulatory bodies such as the SEC and promote deregulation, especially concerning cryptocurrency and AI.
Curtis Yarvin, a political theorist and founder of the neoreactionary movement, complements Thiel's perspective. Yarvin advocates for the abolition of elections and the establishment of a CEO-like figure at the helm of government. In his 2022 essay, The Butterfly Revolution, he outlines a scenario where a leader seizes full control, bypassing traditional democratic checks and balances, and systematically dismantles existing institutions to pave the way for authoritarian rule.
This theoretical framework finds a real-world parallel in Elon Musk's recent actions. Musk's approach involves taking control of key government data systems, attempting to shut down entire agencies, and terminating federal employees en masse. His team has faced allegations of hacking into classified networks, locking career civil servants out of their systems, and withholding government data to centralize power.
Musk's actions are not merely efficiency reforms; they are a litmus test for the extent of executive authority before encountering resistance. This strategy embodies Yarvin's model: replacing democratic governance with executive power, stripping institutions of independent control, and consolidating authority under a singular ruler. Despite facing legal challenges from federal employees and mounting opposition from lawmakers concerned about his unchecked access to classified data, Musk remains one of the most powerful unelected officials in America, actualizing the roles envisioned by Yarvin and Thiel.
Historically, The Extraction Class has supported the MAGA movement and tolerated the Christian Nationalists, viewing them as tools to dismantle the old system. They believed they could navigate the ensuing chaos by establishing an "efficient" corporate monarchy, guided by Yarvin's theories. They assumed they could control the Christian Nationalists with financial influence, secure the Militants' loyalty, and employ AI-driven surveillance to manage the populace.
However, this belief is not only naive but perilous. The Christian Nationalists, whom they considered useful allies, disdain them as secular, globalist elites. The Militants, presumed controllable, view them as weak, decadent parasites. While The Extraction Class may have financed the movement, they lack genuine respect within it.
History demonstrates that those attempting to steer authoritarian movements from above often become their first casualties. German industrialists who funded Hitler believed they could contain him until he no longer required them. Russian oligarchs supporting Putin assumed they could influence him until they became his next victims. The Extraction Class is poised to repeat this fatal error, imagining themselves as architects of a new system when, in reality, they are merely the next targets.
Their wealth will not shield them. Their technology will not outmaneuver the impending turmoil. The world they aspire to construct will turn against them the moment they cease to be useful because history is not an algorithm, society is not a start-up, and power is not a software update you can patch.
While The Extraction Class seeks to dominate through technology and wealth, another faction believes power rightfully belongs to those who seize it by force: The Militant Extremists. Stay tuned for the next installment in this series.
